PEONY WEEKEND 2005

Over 35 flowering varieties
On June 4 and 5 of last year (2005) the first Peony Weekend was held in The Gardens of Appeltern.
Although the peony borders were in their first growing season after being planted in fall 2004 and the couldn't yet display their great beauty to the fullest, visiting this Peony Weekend was very much worth the while. Of the varieties that hadn't flowered or were done flowering already we displayed beautiful vases, resulting in the grand display of over 35 abundantly flowering different varieties of Paeonia.

Any type of weather...
Late May 2005 was treated with a rather warm period with temperatures of 25-30 degrees Celsius (77-86 degrees Fahrenheit), with the result that many cultivars were 'over the top' during this Peony Weekend. The preceding Friday ended the warm period with very heavy showers (which tends to be a very common phenomenon in The Netherlands). Both weekend days started out rainy. On Saturday the sun won the battle and created a really nice afternoon. Throughout the entire Sunday the weather was very changeable.

Despite the slightly disappointing weather the Peony Weekend was fairly well visited. Among the visitors there were many peony enthusiasts that visited The Gardens of Appeltern especially for this Peony Weekend. We were happy to answer many peony questions.

Conclusion
This first Peony Weekend was very satisfying for us. We have only heard (very) positive comments about this initiative. People visiting this weekend were very enthusiastich and very surprised with the many breathtaking appearances of peonies. And thus the main goal of this peony weekend to introduce the new generation of peony varieties to the public is well achieved!

Also we have developed some new ideas during these days with which we can improve our website, service and peony collection further. We enjoyed this weekend very much and will do our very best to make the Peony Weekend 2006 even more successfull. We would love to see you then!
