PEONY WEEKEND 2007

Only 20 flowering varieties.....

During the weekend of June 9 and 10, 2007 we organized the third Peony Weekend in succession in The Gardens of Appeltern. The spring of 2007 started extremely early, earlier than ever. The timing for this weekend turned out to be most unlucky... The peonyborders were close to completely done flowering, and we were only able to show 20 flowering varieties to the visitors.

Not much left colour to see in the peony borders...

Even the latest of varieties were very close to done flowering...

OK weather
April 2007 was the warmest and dryest ever in The Netherlands, and spring never arrived this early. As did the flowering season for the peonies, this came 2 to 3 weeks earlier than normal - which is extreme. Only after the first week of May the weather turned, but too late for the Peony Weekend... The peonies had catched speedy growth and were not to slow down anymore. But this is nature, and in gardening everyone has to deal with this.

Luckily the weather was all right for us and the visitors during this Peony Weekend, and while enjoying the nice weather we were able to talk to the visitors about peonies.

We displayed as many varieties as nature had allowed us to.

Less visitors due to the early spring, but of course it wasn't less fun!

Again a good Peony Weekend edition
Despite the early spring and the fact we could not show the visitors what we had expected and hoped for, The Peony Weekend 2007 was a success for us nontheless. We made the best of the opportunity to promote the genus Paeonia, and for ourselves it is always a feast to be around and talk about peonies! The visitors came in smaller numbers than previous years, most likely fed by the suspicion that there would not be much left to see. The people that did come however were very enthusiastic once more, and did not seem to find the display small at all. So we can only be satisfied about this weekend, and thus the only thing left for us to say is:

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEE YOU IN APPELTERN ON MAY 31 AND/OR JUNE 1 THIS YEAR!
